how do i get my new cat to start using her own litter box and food bowls?

I recently added a new 6 mo. old kitten to my one-cat home, and they have been progressing as far as getting along but I've noticed the most tension comes around the food bowls and the litter box. My older cat does not like the new kitty using either, and although I have provided new food bowls and a new litter box, set off in another part of the house, she still insists on using my older cat's box and drinking her water. I've placed her in the new litter box a few times but I'm not quite sure if that has helped. Another reason I would prefer the kitten to use her own litter box is she doesn't cover her mess when she goes and it STINKS!!! Any suggestions?

This happened to two cats that I looked after. Their solution was to put the food bowls; litter boxes; and toys in different parts of the house. You did this. If the kitty still does not go to her own litter box then you should try to move her to her own litterbox whenever you see her doing her business in the other cat's box.If that does not work then you should use a spray bootle and spary her LIGHTLY. You have to train her. Then move her back to her own box.Hope this helps.

I'm not certain that spraying the kitten when she's using the litter box would be such a good idea. She may start to be afraid to use any box then and start doing her business behind the sofa. I have three cats and they all use all four boxes and eat from each other's bowls. However, at 6 months, your kitten should still be on kitten food and that's not a good diet for your older cat. I might try adding a few other boxes if you have the room. As for the water, I have a Drinkwell fountain for my cats and they share it happily.

you can buy a big litter box and they can share and have the same food bowls and its easier to clean try it see if it works
